Step 5: Create Detailed Site Map

Using the site map in your approved Project Scope Document as a base, work with your designer and information architect (if you have one) to determine a detailed site map. Define a hierarchy of all the information on the site and organize it from an intelligent perspective. If you want to know if it's intelligent, show it to some potential users for some feedback.

The detailed site map will identify the number and type of different template pages that require design. Normally, designs will be required for:

  • The splash page (if desired - this is a matter of personal preference). This can also be the user log-in page;
  • The home page;
  • The primary content group page (if required for sites with hierarchical groups of content);
  • The individual content page for a news story or content item;
  • Functionality pages (for search results, discussion forums, address books and other interactive functions listed in the Needs Analysis section of this chapter);
  • CMS interface (if required)
