Intranet Process, Planning & Development

Step 14: Develop CMS

Develop the CMS (if required) as per the specifications in the Project Scope Document. Integrate it with the user authentication system (if necessary) and then test all the required functionality from different user profiles with distinct access privileges. Also port some sample content into the system for testing purposes. This can be "lorem ipsum" mock Latin text to make the selection of sample text easier.

You should now have a functioning navigation that defines a "sense of place" for the user within the intranet site. As well, the CMS should be ready for content to be added.

When the CMS has been completed, an instruction manual on its use and administration should be created. This manual should be distributed to the relevant administrators, and also be posted inside the CMS for other users who will be making updates in the future. Note that the developers can begin this process by including inline comments in their code to serve as basic documentation for future developers. These comments are like notes in the margin that are not read by the intranet server but are visible to people who are reviewing and editing the code now and in the future.
